Biography of Bill Chrystal![]() Bill is Pastor Emeritus of the First Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) of Reno, Nevada. A native of Seattle, he graduated from Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington (B.A. & M.Ed.). He attended Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, and completed seminary at Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis (M.Div. & D.D.). Bill also studied at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (M.A.).
Bill was the pastor of churches in Illinois, California, Maryland, Massachusetts and Nevada before retiring from church work in 2007. He also served five years as a Navy Chaplain—three with the 1st Marine Division and two aboard the U.S.S. Samuel Gompers (AD 37). For this service, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal—the latter for providing "ministerial and humanitarian aid" following the October 17, 1989 San Francisco Earthquake. Bill Chrystal is a leading authority on Theologian/Political Philosopher Reinhold Niebuhr and the Niebuhr family. He has written three books about the Niebuhrs and many articles on a wide variety of topics for scholarly journals, including The New England Quarterly, Church History and Theology Today. For twelve years, Chrystal was the host of the nationally syndicated radio program The Thomas Jefferson Hour. He is an expert on our founding fathers and early American history. Bill is also a leading historical interpreter of Alexander Hamilton and John Adams, and has given hundreds of performances across the country during the past decade. In addition to writing several books and producing DVDs about these founding fathers, Chrystal has appeared in USA Today, Christian Science Monitor, Boston Globe, Washington Post and the LA Times. Bill has also appeared on WHRO's HearSay with Cathy Lewis, Fox & Friends, C-SPAN3, and the Neil Cavuto show on FOX News. His biography appears in Who's Who in America. Bill currently lives in southern Virginia with his wife and rescued dogs and cats. |
